Joen,
Just got back from the Seattle area where we met our adult children for Christmas. I was so thrilled to get a photo of Mt. Rainier in December and was pretty proud of myself until I saw these-incredible photos of the mountain and so atmospheric. Guess when you live there, you can catch it "out" in various seasons and times. Thanks for sharing Cheryl

Hi Dianne,
Thank you so much for your kind words. Reflecting upon the images you named, here are my thoughts:
The photos Woodland Reflection, After the Rain, Afternoon Stroll in the Churchyard were all done with my film camera (Nikon N65 or F100). In my first workshop I learned to use Fuji Velvia slide film (ISO 100). This is a "slow" film; hence it is able to pick up colors, shadows, highlights, and other color nuances more easily than faster film. Consequently, the image colors are more saturated than when using faster film. Additionally, it is my understanding that slide film provides a better color representation than print film.

Once I could no longer get Fuji Velvia in my area (nor get it processed locally), I had to get with the rest of the world and go digitally. I almost always now shoot at 200 ISO, as I did for The Mountain is Out. (I might play with 100 ISO this year to see what the differences are between the two with my digital camera.) Also, I mainly shoot in aperature priority (A mode), which allows me to choose the F-stop and the camera selects the shutter speed. I'm not a professional photographer, so this may not be exactly the right answer, but it's what I do and it works for me. This year I want to increase my use of shooting manually. It's pretty easy to do, if I remember everything. However, I don't trust myself yet, because I often forget one step. That makes for some interesting surprises and disappointments. I hope this is helpful. Have fun playing with your camera. Happy New Year! I wonder what will be your creative challenge in 2012.

Hi Norma,
Thank you. I'm a bit lazy in winter with my photography, but I shouldn't, as there are wonderful opportunities for interesting images. I hope you create more wonderful quilts. Let me know what your challenge for 2012 will be as soon as you figure it out. Happy New Year, Norma.

Happy New Year Martha!
Well, I know you had a trying 2011, so I am glad we are all out of that year. A fender bender to begin this year is a good way to get the worst out of the way. Now all should look up and be on the bright side. If Corel Draw is anything like it was in the 90s, it has a very good tutorial. I learned a lot from it. C.D. was the first illustrator program I used and I think it's an excellent program for quilters. So Martha, I look forward to you learning Corel Draw and designing a beautiful quilt....and then making that quilt. You have to keep me updated. Take care. Joen

Greetings Jane & Happy New Year! The Mountain is out actually looks like a painting, perhaps more oil painting than watercolor. I actually don't know how that happened. Perhaps because it was late in the day when we came upon this scene on a Mt. Rainier trail. If you ever paint a scene like this, send me a photo of it.

Happy New Year Joen,
Your photos always amaze me. I understand about using the things you have listed here for effects. What I don't understand is how you get the intense (sometimes surreal) color as in Reflection, Rain, Churchyard, and even Mountain without using Photo Shop Elements or something similar. Thanks for the beauty you put in my mailbox.
